  • PlainEdge ground flat for precise cutting; blade measures 3 inches long
  • Buffed carbon-fiber handle feels like natural extension of hand

As the name implies, the Caly3 is the newest iteration of the Calypso2 and Calypso1 knives. Like comparing a classic Corvette to a modern Corvette, the Caly3 is an offshoot of the original Calypsos--a testament to the knives' durability and long-lasting appeal--but with improved functionality and design. The Caly3 features a high-end, laminated ZDP-189 steel blade made using 3 percent carbon, making it harder and higher on the Rockwell scale while preserving the sharpness. The blade is versatile and exact, with a PlainEdge that's ground flat for precise cutting. The buffed carbon-fiber handle, meanwhile, is shaped so that the index finger sits on the underside and the thumb naturally above the jimped slip-resistant spine. As a result, the knife feels like part of the hand, with a controlled grip and no forward or backward slide while cutting. Other features include an ambidextrous deep-pocket-carry tip-up wire clip and a mid-positioned back lock.

Specifications

  • Blade: Laminated SDP-189 steel
  • Handle: Buffed carbon fiber
  • Blade length: 3 inches
  • Blade thickness: 1/8 inch
  • Cutting edge: 2-5/8 inches
  • Hole diameter: 15/32 inches
  • Overall length: 7 inches
  • Closed length: 4-1/16 inches

True to the heritage of the Calypso 1 and 2, it offers exceptional ergonomics that make it feel like a natural extension of the hand. its scientifically-designed handle profile features stunning polished carbon fiber scales over a sturdy framework of skeletonized stainless steel liners. Its leaf-shaped blade is constructed of three layers of laminated steel. The core is ZDP-189, an extraordinary steel that contains 3% carbon for exceptional hardness and edge retention. It is sandwiched between two layers of 420J2 stainless steel that provide increased strength and corrosion resistance. Like a fine Samurai sword, the boundary between these layers is visible near the blade edge--a reminder that you are cutting with the very best! The blade locks open via a sturdy back lock mechanism and an ambidextrous deep-pocket wire clip provides tip-up carry on both the left and right sides.

Spyderco byrd Robin2 Black G-10 PlainEdge Knife

Spyderco byrd Robin2 Black G-10 PlainEdge Knife Review

Spyderco byrd Robin2 Black G-10 PlainEdge Knife Feature

  • Ambidextrous tip-up/tip-down clip.
  • Spine and choil jimping.
  • Full length dual steel handle liners.
  • Screw together construction. David Boye Dent.
  • Flat-ground blade.
The Robin2 G-10 is refreshed with many new features.  Its mid-size makes the Robin2 an easy knife to carry everyday in an office our outdoor environment.  Its full-flat ground blade is high-carbon 8Cr13MoV stainless steel with a comet-shaped hole for one hand opening/closing.  Jimping (crosshatching) dots the spine, making a textured section where the thumb rests, creating tactile resistance that restrains the folder from sliding and slipping when cutting.  The handle is made of a front and back G-10 scale set over a stainless liner.  G-10 is an epoxy-filled laminate with a weave-texture similar to cloth.  It provides secure and steady grip when cutting, resists chemicals, oil and temperature extremes.  The welcome addition of a four-way clip offers the option of carrying the folder tip-up/tip-down or left-right-handed and a lanyard hole located at the back of the handle accommodates a secondary-retentive thong or cord.  Custom knifemaker David Boye’s dent feature is a half-moon-shaped snip of steel removed from the lock’s release lever as an added safety feature to the back-lock.
